IN THE FOOTPRINT: THE BATTLE OVER ATLANTIC YARDS
November 12, 2010 – December 11, 2010
Irondale Center in Fort Greene, Brooklyn
The Civilians presents the next phase of its Atlantic Yards investigation, In the Footprint, which is a new play with music and the culmination of this long-term exploration of development in Brooklyn and its effect on neighborhood and community. This lively presentation of theater, dance and music takes its inspiration from interviews with the real life players in the story of Brooklyn and the Atlantic Yards: residents, business owners, politicians, students, youth groups, civic organizations, and many more.
Using material gathered for The Civilians’ critically-acclaimed presentation of Brooklyn at Eye Level in 2008, along with new interviews about the most current events, Atlantic Yards is the living documentation of an urban community facing industrial-sized growing pains. The Civilians’ team of artists collected information everywhere, from public events to beauty salons, developing insights into how buildings, services, public space and economic issues shape the ecology of the neighborhood around us.
The play has a book by Artistic Director Steve Cosson (Gone Missing, This Beautiful City), and new songs by composer Michael Friedman (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, This Beautiful City). The performances will also feature several post-play presentations and panel discussions with local figures as well as the creative artists.
